The Native Brown Trout

Fly fishing for trout begins in March & April when the first fly, usually large dark olives followed by medium olives and iron blue dunn's appear. The fish are most active during mid-day. May sees a flourish of fly hatches, including mayfly in some rivers, but also sedge of various species, olives, black gnats, hawthorn flies and many more. The hatches start early and continue into the evening. This pattern is sustained into June when evening fishing can be superb during hatches of blue winged olive, a widespread Irish fly found on most rivers in Ireland.

Brown trout are thought to be the most difficult of the trout species to catch especially the larger trout in the river. The large trout tend to feed late in the evening and into the night and any angler who is along the river bank at dusk can tell you about the large trout they have seen gulping flies and hearing the distctive plooping sound of large trout feeding. The Agivey river is abundant with trout as it has many excellent streams and deep pools which the trout thrive in.

The river is no longer stocked with farmed bread fish as they proved to be doing harm to the Salmon fry which spawn in the gravely stream beds. Farm bread fish tend to eat anything and everything!

The Agivey in most aspects offers good natural habitat for the Brown trout, as they need good cover like overhanging banks which fish take shelter from strong currents and these in turn offer good habitat for insects which is an escential source of food. Trout also like good shelter in the form of large rocks in the river bed as well as plants. Young fish need the shallow gravel streams to grow up and the larger trout move on into the deeper streams as well as the safe haven of the deep pools.

Trout need good clean poloution free water which the Agivey caters for very well. The river is closely monitered for any contamination if in deed it occours.
